Riebeek Valley

Art OrchardOver the last years, the Riebeek Valley has become the touristic centre of the Swartland. In the pretty twin villages of Riebeek Kasteel and Riebeek West a creative crowd of artists has settled. In Art Orchard in Sarel Cilliers Street in Riebeek Kasteel you will find a considerable collection of works by local artists and designers: paintings, jewellery, pottery and glass objects, cast iron products and much more. The town also impresses with its numerous, diligently resored Victorian and Cape-Dutch houses. Many coffeeshops and restaurants invite you to stay. The atmospere is peaceful and serene.

Smuts birth placeA worthwhile destination for the historically interested visitor is the farmhouse where Jan Christiaan Smuts was born. It lies near Riebeek West on the farm Ongegund, which is nowadays part of the PPC cement factory. General Smuts was born here in 1870 as the second child of a farmer's family and spent most of his childhood here.

Jan SmutsAfter his study of philosophie at Stellenbosch ging Smuts went into politics and became a member of President Paul Kruger's cabinet. After the Anglo-Boer War, Smuts worked for the reconciliation of the British and the Afrikaners. He founded the democratic United Party and is known as the architect of the South African Union. Smuts was Prime Minister until 1948, when he was defeated by D.F. Malan, who then initiated the Apartheid era.

Jan Smut's birth house is beautifuly restored, with all the original furniture. In the adjoining museum, the life and work of this highly esteemed politician is documented mainly with photos and newspaper articles. It is open daily except for mondays.
