Travel Information

Dorp Museum StellenboschMuseums
Stellenbosch is very impressive with its many buildings in the Cape-Dutch architectural style. A walk through the Village Museum (Dorpmuseum) in the centre of town gives a vivid insight into the life of the Cape settlers in the 18th and 19th century. The museum consists of some fully furnished residences, slave quarters and expansive gardens. Schreuder Huis is the oldest house, (dating back from 1709) and it belonged to a German mercenary of the Dutch-East India Trading Company. The Bettermann Huis is a typical residence from the 18th century and a judge lived here. Note the shower! From the early 19th century dates the Grosvenor House, a manor house in the classical style. Opened: mondays to saturdays from 9:30 to 5 and sundays from 2 to 5 o'clock. Tel 021-8872902.

Also well worth a visit is the
Toy & Miniature Museum next to the Tourist Information office. It displays an amazing collection of historical toys and a number of filigree miniature scenes. The museum is open on weekdays from 9 to 4 and on Sundays from 2 to 6 o'clock. Tel 021-8867888.

Oom SamieOom Samie Se Winkel in Dorp Street, Nr 44, is not really a museum, but when entering the over 100 year old grocery store you will feel like you've been transported back to the Victorian era. The shop consists of several rooms, all packed up to the ceiling with antiques and bric á brac, homemade jam, old postcards and prints, sweets, nostalgic jewellery, clothes and many unusual souvenirs. It is very difficult to keep your wallet in your pocket at Oom Samie, a shop for prolonged browsing.

Stellenbosch offers many cosy coffee gardens in the shade of old oaktrees and a number of excellent restaurants. Highly recommendable is the
Volkskombuis, where traditional Afrikaans cuisine is served. Tel 021-8872121.

Bergkelder StellenboschStellenbosch Wine Route
The Stellenbosch Wine Route is well sign-posted. The most famous wine estates are
Blaauwklippen, Hartenberg, Morgenhof, Spiers and the historic Lanzerac, which consists of a reputable restaurant and hotel. Particularly recommendable is a visit to the Bergkelder Cellars on the outskirts of Stellenbosch on the R44, where excellent wine tours and tastings are offered. There is even a wine museum. Tel 021-8098492.

JonkershoekJonkershoek Valley
East of town lies the beautiful Jonkershoek Valley with the
Jonkershoek State Forest and the Assegaibosch Nature Reserve. There are some very nice and not too strenuous hiking trails, which offer an insight into the local Fynbos vegetation. If you like to fish for trout, visit the historical Jonkershoek Fish Hatchery.
