Hiking in De Hoop
There are a number of nice hiking trails in the reserve. The Coot Trail, the shortest route, may be completed in an hour, while the Heron Trail takes two hours and the Grebe Trail, the longest route, takes approximately three hours to complete. Long hikes are also available. The 5-day and 54 kms long De Hoop Whale Trail is new. It takes you over the Potberg to Koppie Alleen along the coast. You spend 5 nights in different overnight huts. Average fitness required, not suitable for children. Special service: If you don't want to carry your provisions, for an extra fee the park administration will transport it for you.

Travel Information

The De Hoop Nature Reserve lies approx. 50 kms east of Bredasdorp in the Overberg. From Cape Town you will need 3 hours. The access road is untarred. The gate opens at 7:00 a.m. and closes at 6:00 p.m. Day visitors are requested to arrive no later than 16:00 so that they have time to enjoy the reserve before the gates close.

There are 9 attractive and affordable cottages in the reserve. Three of the cottages can be called luxurious. They offer 2 bedrooms with 5 beds, a fully equipped kitchen with stove, fridge, cutlery and crockery. Linen provided.

Six cottages are more basic. They offer 2 bedrooms with 4 beds. Fully equipped kitchen with stove, fridge, cutlery and crockery. Linen is not provided in this type.

All cottages are frequently booked, especially on weekends and during holidays. Early booking is recommended. The camping ground - basic, but beautiful - only has 10 plots for 6 persons each and is often booked, especially over the weekends, during school holidays and in the whale season from September and January. There is no electricity.

An interesting alternative is the private Buchu Bushcamp next to the reserve. It consists of beautiful self-catering chalets and a restaurant.

There is no restaurant in De Hoop and shopping facilities are very limited. One should do the grocery shopping latest in Bredasdorp, before getting to the nature reserve.
