Imfolozi - Hluhluwe
Left: White, right: Black Rhino

Black and White Rhinos

The names "White Rhino" and "Black Rhino" have nothing to do with the colouring of the animals, but derive from a hearing error. Instead of "white" it should be "wide" referring to the wider mouth of this rhino species in comparison to the narrow-mouth rhino, now called "black".

The rhinoceros is still endangered. Even in the National Parks it is not always possible to protect them completely. Poachers hunt them because they can gain high prices for the horns. Particularly in Asia it is, in pulverised form, in high demand as a potency booster.

Rhinos are herbivorous and mainly live on foliage and twigs. They can weigh up to 3 tons and grow 40 years old. Rhinos have quite a weak eyesight, but a fine sense of smell and an excellent hearing. Besides the humans they have no enemies. Even lions can't harm them seriously. But they closely watch their distance to other creatures. Especially the Black Rhino can turn dangerous, if one gets too close.
