Tembe Elephant Park
KwaZulu-Natal

Travel Information

Access
Access the park from the south best on the R22 in the direction of KwaNganase. At Pelindaba turn left. The road is tarred but might have many deep potholes. The park entrance is directly at the road.

Tembe Elephant ParkDriving in the Park
Within the park a four-wheel drive with good ground clearance is indispensable, because all the roads are soft sand with deep tracks. If you have a normal 2-wheel car, park it at the gate and join a guided safari in an open safari vehicle. This is nice in any case as you will benefit from the guide's knowledgeable reports. These safaris are conducted by the private Tembe Elephant Lodge. Tel (031) 2670144.

Opening Hours
The gate is open in summer (October to March ) from 5 am to 7 pm and in winter (April to September) from 6 am to 4 pm. Tel: (035) 5920001, Fax: (035) 5920240.

Anopheles Mücke

Malaria Prophylaxis

Northern KwaZulu-Natal (north of St. Lucia) unfortunately falls within the malaria area. The risk is not high, but even the dangerous Malaria Tropica occurs here, and one should employ prophylactic measures in time. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for the best remedies.

TabardBecause no malaria medication provides 100% protection, rather prevent yourself from being stung by mosquitos in the first place. The mosquito repellent TABARD works well. It is available in most supermarkets and shops in Zululand. It is said that a cure of of vitamine B complex, taken daily starting a week prior to your stay, gives you a smell unattractive to mosquitos.

Tembe LodgeAccommodationt in Tembe
There is no restcamp, no campground and no store. The Tembe Elephant Lodge, however, offers luxurious accommodation in safari tents with all meals and snacks provided. The revenue from tourism benefits the local Tembe community. For ecological reasons one doesn't aim at large numbers of tourists.
