Travel Information

Sani Pass Access
The access road to the pass starts 3 kilometres north of Himeville. The gravel road only gets really difficult behind the South African border post (1900 metres). Officially only 4x4's are admitted, but in a vehicle with good ground clearance, good tyres and a strong engine (e.g. a Bakkie) one can also manage. When it snows, the pass is usually closed. In winter it is generally better to bring snow chains.

The border is open daily from 8 am to 4 pm. To enter the Kingdom of Lesotho, citizens of the EU, USA and some Commonwealth countries only need a passport. It has to be valid for at least another 6 months. Travellers from most other countries additionally need a visum. - Please enquire ahead of your trip: Lesotho National Development Corporation

Good News: Sani Pass is going to be tarred
The provincial government of KwaZulu-Natal has recently decided to have the Sani Pass road tarred. Tenders are closed already. - It might be a loss for adventure tourism, but for the poor Kingdom of Lesotho, economically completely dependent on South Africa, it would definitely mean progress.
