Travel Information

Access to the Blood River / Ncome Heritage Site
The access road turns off the R33, 27 kilometres north-east of Dundee (or 45 km south-west of Vryheid). The 20 km long road is not tarred, but usually well passable in a normal car.

Blood River Heritage Site
The wagon fort - called "Laager" - at the Bloedrivier battlefield was erected in the year 1971. The 64 Voortrekker wagons were rebuilt true to the original and in the original size from cast-iron covered with bronze. The open wagons in the centre held the ammunition. All wagon sculptures stand on a concrete foundation.

Visitor Centre
In the Visitor Centre in front of the wagon fort complex one can watch a 30-minute video about the Blood River battle and its background (in English or Afrikaans). And it houses a book- and souvenir shop and a little restaurant in the style of an old Boer kitchen. Close by are a picnic spot and camping facilities. The Blood River Heritage Site is open every day from 9 am to 5 pm. Tel 072 9883544.
Display in the Ncome MuseumNcome Museum
The Ncome Museum, opened in a festive act in 1999, is situated across the Ncome river. It has the shape of the Zulu battle formation "Chest and Horns" as introduced by King Shaka. Inside this monument an extensive exhibition on the Zulu culture is shown, explaining the structure of their army, their weapons and battle techniques. There is also a souvenir shop.
